Insulating
a
New
Home

The most important aspect
of insulating a new home is doing it properly. Most homes are
insulated with the same type of standard fiberglass insulation
- the key is installing it correctly.
Installing fiberglass insulation takes time and
care. When installing it in roof rafters there must be an air
space for the smooth flow of air between the insulation and the
roof sheathing. Styrofoam proper vents are needed to insure air
flows from the soffit vents through the rafters to the ridge vent.
Insulation should be stuffed in all the nooks
and crannies by all doors and windows. Many buyers want insulation
in all interior bedroom and bathroom walls to retard sound.
Fiberglass insulation comes in R13 for floors
and walls, R19 for 6" exterior walls and R30 and R38 for
ceilings and rafters.
Other types of insulation include foil faced polyisocyanurate
foam sheathing boards and polystyrene foam wall sheathing. These
type of sheathing boards have R values of 5.
